Bach's music was introduced to European audiences when Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809-1847) first conducted Bach's Saint Matthew Passion in Leipzig. In some areas it became more extravagant (notably in the fervent religious atmosphere of Spain and Latin America) and in others it was toned down to suit more conservative tastes. Baroque music gained popularity after Renaissance, in about 1600. The traditional categories are Medieval Music (1150 to 1400), Renaissance Music (1400 to 1600), Baroque Music (1600 to 1750), Classical Music (1750 to 1830), Romantic Music (1830 to 1920) and Contemporary Music (1920 to the present).

Aldus employed competent scholars as editors, compositors, and proofreaders to insure accuracy in his books. Some liturgists have, of course, been considerably less dismissive of the Baroque liturgy. A Renaissance or Mannerist painter would certainly find nothing spiritual about a fruit bowl. By then the Catholic Church had lost large parts of Europe where it had ceased to be the Rome-based supreme power, as it was a century earlier. It is, of course, possible that sonatas for alto recorder (or bassoon, or any other instrument) were played on the basset recorder, but there is no historical evidence for this practice.
